Founded in 1993 and based in Coimbra, Angelus Novus Publishing House has printed, with a brief stop in production in 2005, 110 titles, gaining prestige above all in the areas of essay writing and the re-edition of the classics of portuguese literature. Angelus Novus promoted a new generation of portuguese authors and has published a select series of international authors, both in poetry-Durs Grünbein, Luis Javier Moreno-and essay writing: Antonio Candido, Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, Jacques Derrida, Theodor W. Adorno, Ortega y Gasset, Bill Readings and Eve Kosofsky.
The Angelus Novus which returns to the market in January 2008 aims to continue with that which was essential to the original publishing house-rigour and exigence in the choice of titles and authors- but, at the same time, it is a new Angelus, in the sense that it returns with a completely new image and a catalogue aimed at a broader readership. It is a conceptually different publisher, a fact reflected in the renovated graphic design, and new approach to readership and market visibility.
We cater to a wide range of reader, from 7 to 77 years of age and from the most mainstream to the most alternative walks of life. We are not, and don’t intend to be, an alternative press but a publishing house ready to keep up with and stimulate contemporary debate. As always, the new can come from both the present and the past, from texts that need to be written now or through the recuperation of “classic” or simply forgotten texts. The new can come from both daring graphics and from old and trusted solutions. A beautiful book is an obviously collectable item, however, whether a book is beautiful or merely useful perhaps its real importance lies in the fact that a part of our lives unfurls within its pages.
Angelus Novus publishes works in all genres, without moral, political or religious prejudices in what concerns the positions sustained by the authors and disregarding the possibly controversial nature of their texts.
However, Angelus Novus does not publish works of religious or political propaganda nor does it publish works which expressly defend racism, fascism or discrimination due to gender or sexual identity.
